James Madison Hires Driesell; Penders to Texas
The University of Texas hired Tom Penders of Rhode Island as its basketball coach. Penders, 42, said he accepted without hesitation although his two-year stay at Rhode Island “was a happy marriage.”
In those two seasons, Rhode Island had a 48-17 record. This season, the team reached the regional semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament.
Penders replaces Bob Weltlich, who was fired March 14.
