High School Track and Field : Hughes Has County Best in Shot, but Mt. Carmel Beats Orange Glen

Laura Hughes of Orange Glen High School had a San Diego County best with a put of 41-feet 4 1/2-inches in the shot, but Orange Glen lost to host Mt. Carmel, 94-43, in a Palomar League girls’ track and field meet Thursday.

Hughes, who held the previous county-best of 40-9, had three puts better than that Thursday. She also won the discus with a toss of 121-3.

Mt. Carmel’s Margaret Ortega won the 100 meters in 12.6 seconds.

In other Palomar League meets:

Poway 75, San Dieguito 52--Christy Kurras, a sophomore, cleared a county-best 5-8 to win the high jump, bettering the previous best of 5-7 set by Serra’s Lynn Patrick. Kurras, whose previous best was 5-4, also won the long jump (16-6 1/2).

Torrey Pines 86, Vista 38--Between them, sisters Cory and Gina Westby won four events for Torrey Pines. Cory, a senior, won the 100 (13.1) and the 100-meter low hurdles (16.3). Gina, a sophomore, won the 400 (1:03.0) and the 800 (2:30.0).

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Marcos 69, Escondido 56--San Marcos swept the jumping events. Jennifer Pond won the high jump (5-0), Stefanie Benway won the long jump (15-2 1/2) and Edy Smith won the triple jump (32-5 1/2).

CITY CENTRAL

Crawford 112, Our Lady of Peace 17--Onnie Ferguson won the 200 in 25.9 and Angela Harrison won the 100-meter low hurdles in 15.9 for Crawford (5-0) at Balboa Stadium. The Crawford 400-meter relay team (Marsi Reed, Denise Goodman, Cassandra Edwards and Malika Fowler) won with a time of 53.5.

CITY EASTERN Morse 78, Point Loma 58--Stacy Thompson went 38-4 in the triple jump--tops in the county this year--to lead Morse. Rochelle Johnson of Patrick Henry had been the leader with a a 37-4 1/2 triple jump. Thompson’s best was 37-3.

BOYS PALOMAR LEAGUE

Mt. Carmel 78, Orange Glen 41--Orange Glen junior Glen Reyes’ county-best time of 10.5 in the 100 meters highlighted the meet. San Diego High’s Jim Kegler had the previous county best of 10.6. Reyes also ran the anchor leg on the winning 400-meter relay team (44.6). He took the baton trailing by about three yards and won by five. Reyes also won the long jump at 21-8 1/2. Teammate Lenny McGill won the triple jump at 46-0, an inch short of his season best.

Vista 72, Torrey Pines 64--Bo Morgan won the long jump (19-7) and the triple jump (39-11) for Vista. Paco Camarena won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.8) and 300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.0). But Camarena, one of six in the county to clear 6-6, was beaten in the high jump. Vista’s Chris Cannon won at 6-2 1/2; Camarena cleared 6-2.

Poway 124, San Dieguito 12--Poway’s Jerry Ashworth won the 100 meters in 10.9.

CITY CENTRAL

Crawford 82, St. Augustine 54--Goshu Tadese won the 1,600 meters in a county-best 4:24.7 at Balboa Stadium. Tadese, who also won the 3,200 meters (9:51.7), had the previous best (4:25.5) as well. Thelis Braswell won the 200 in 22.8 and also ran a leg on Crawford’s winning 400-meter relay team (44.8).

CITY EASTERN Morse 91, Point Loma 45--Melvin Maxwell had victories in the triple jump (44-9 1/2) and the long jump (21-11 1/2) for Morse. Morse’s Larry Maxey (22.6) and Myron Lesane (22.9) took the first two places in the 220 yards.

CITY WESTERN

La Jolla 73, Mission Bay 63--Charles Huff won the 100 meters (11.0), the 220 (23.0) and had his best jump of the year to win the long jump (23-9) on La Jolla’s dirt track. Huff did not compete in the triple jump, in which he is the county leader at 47-5.

GROSSMONT

Santana 86, El Cajon Valley 50--Brian Negrette of El Cajon Valley won twice, but that wasn’t enough to offset Santana’s depth. Negrette jumped 6-4 to tie Joe Church of Santana for first in the high jump. Negrette beat Church in the triple jump with a leap of 44-11 3/4. Church went 42-5.

El Capitan 91 1/2, Valhalla 43 1/2--Brothers Erin and Mike Murray finished first and second in the discus for El Capitan (5-0). Erin Murray won with a toss of 157-9, and Mike Murray went 150-1. Chad Lake was first in the shot put (51-4) for Valhalla.

Mt. Miguel 86, Helix 41--Frank Davis won the 100 (11.2), 200 (23.0) and anchored the winning 440-relay team (44.1) for Mt. Miguel.

NONLEAGUE

Monte Vista 70, Fallbrook 66--Fallbrook’s Brent Noon, a sophomore, put the shot, 62-0, a half-inch off his county best. Noon also won the discus at 164-4. Teammate Greg Frinell won the long jump (21-11) and the triple jump (43-7).
