College Roundup : UCI Women Win Tennis Tournament

The UC Irvine women’s tennis team defeated the University of Utah, 6-3, to win the University of Houston tournament Saturday.

Kathy Rose, a junior playing at No. 2 singles, won all three of her matches to lead Irvine. She also teamed with Courtney Weichsel, a sophomore, at No. 1 doubles to win all three doubles matches.

Irvine (16-5) has won 8 of its last 9 matches.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 6, Cal State Long Beach 3--The Titans (14-11 overall, 2-6 in conference play) defeated the 49ers (6-14, 2-6) for the first time in the 17-year series by splitting the singles and sweeping the doubles at Fullerton. “Nobody beats us 17 years in a row,” Fullerton Coach Brad Allen said.

In PCAA men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Long Beach 2--No. 6 Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann, ranked No. 56 in singles, defeated No. 8 Greg Failla of Cal State Long Beach, 6-1, 6-1, to lead Irvine (18-5, 3-0) past Long Beach at the Racquet Club in Irvine. Kronemann improved his record to 21-11 in his second top-10 upset in four days; Wednesday, he defeated No. 4 Scott Melville of USC.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Caltech 8, Christ College Irvine 1--The Eagles (5-14) could only win the No. 1 singles match against Caltech (3-12), when Alan Iverson defeated Mark Holdsworth, 6-2, 7-6, at Irvine.

In men’s track and field:

Chapman 75, Christ College Irvine 62, the Master’s 9--Jeff Rhodes won four events to lead host Chapman. The junior finished first in the javelin (111-feet 11-inches), discus (85-2 1/2), triple jump (29-0) and shotput (31-1 1/2) in Chapman’s first victory of the season.

In women’s track and field:

Cal Lutheran 84, Chapman 47, Christ College Irvine 14, the Master’s 10--Chapman’s Lili Bess and Millie Lewis won two events apiece. Bess took the javelin with a toss of 113-3 and the long jump with a jump of 15-7 1/2. Lewis won the discus (124-2) and the shotput (35-9 1/2).
