Dana Hills Track Invitational : Marshall Fundamental, Western Christian Win Titles
Pasadena’s Marshall Fundamental High School won the boys’ overall team competition at the Dana Hills Invitational track and field meet Saturday. The Eagles scored 68 1/2 points, followed by Sierra Madre Maranatha (54) and Elsinore (42).
Covina Western Christian won the girls’ title with 64 points, followed by Yucaipa (61) and Phelan Serrano (47).
Tim Dennis of Laguna Beach won the shotput with a toss of 48-feet 1 1/2-inches. Later, he finished second in the discus with a throw of 130-9.
Joel Whittenberg of Laguna Hills was victorious in the discus with a throw of 135-4.
John Adomian, the defending 100-meter champion from Canoga Park Chaminade, held off a challenge from Jason Simpson of Carlsbad Army-Navy to win the 100 meters in a meet-record time of 11.14 seconds. Simpson, the son of former football great O.J. Simpson, equaled the old meet mark set in 1985 by finishing second in 11.18.
Adomian overcame a shaky start to stay even with the pack during the first part of the race. He then came through with a burst in the last 50 meters for the victory.
“I came out of the blocks kind of awkward, but that’s how I usually come out of the blocks,” Adomian said. “I don’t mind not having the kind of attention (Simpson) gets, because when you win the race when you don’t get a lot of attention, you feel a whole lot better about it.”
Tim DeKokkock of Cerritos Valley Christian also set a meet record by winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.04. The old meet record of 15.49 was established in 1985.
Alicia Harasty of Western Christian tied the meet record in the girls’ 100-meter low hurdles by winning the final in 15.87. The record was first set in 1985.

--Tanya Thayer of Serrano, the defending Southern Section 1-A 3,200-meter champion, pulled away in the final to win that event. Thayer, who was trailed closely by Karen Tallamantes of Western Christian for most of the race, finished in 11:35.90.
Tallamantes was second in 11:38.94, and Denise Brunsetter of Laguna Hills third in 12:29.55. Later, Tallamantes finished second in the 1,600 meters in 5:26.66.
--The Maranatha boys’ 1,600-meter relay team finished first in 3 minutes 37.41 seconds. Yucaipa was second (3:38.41), followed by Marshall Fundamental (3:39.15).
