Academy Awards news and views from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

It may look as though veteran star greeter Army Archerd has the best job of the Academy Awards--right at the end of the long red carpet--but the Daily Variety columnist told The Times: “I look forward to this (year) with a great deal of fear.” The awards will be held at the significantly larger Shrine Auditorium, making Archerd’s job “tough,” he said, because “there are that many more people to interview when they arrive.” His Oscar-watching tips for this year’s ceremony: “It will be the best horse race of all time. The supporting awards (presented early in the broadcast) won’t indicate whether there will be a sweep or not. If Albert Brooks wins, it doesn’t mean a sweep for ‘Broadcast News.’ ” Archerd added: “The audience will really get a cross section of the motion picture world from the presenters. Real movie buffs will get a chance to see some of the stars who have aged considerably from the 2 a.m. late show to the 6 p.m. awards.” But fun for Archerd seems out of the question: “You just hope to survive.”
