Prep Softball : Woodbridge’s Boyd Throws 3rd No-Hitter

Share

Tiffany Boyd pitched her third no-hitter of the season Tuesday as she struck out 19 to lead Woodbridge High School to a 2-0 victory in a Pacific Coast League softball opener at Trabuco Hills.

Boyd (12-3), who faced 24 batters, walked three and allowed only two fair balls--both grounders to second base. She finished the game by retiring 11 straight batters, 10 on strikeouts.

The Warriors (13-5) scored both their runs in the first inning although they failed to get a hit. After Boyd walked to lead off the game and advanced to second on Marta Bickert’s wild pitch, Lisa Wehren hit a ground ball to first baseman Kathy McNeill.

Instead of touching first base to retire Wehren, McNeill threw the ball late to third in an effort to stop the lead runner.

Then, after Charisse Kiino popped to second and Wehren stole second, Susan Spring hit a ground ball to second baseman Kim Rhoads, who threw late to the plate trying to stop Boyd. Wehren advanced to third on the throw and Spring was safe at first.

With Nancy Johnson batting, Wehren stole home when Spring was caught in a rundown between first and second on an attempted steal.

Bickert (6-8), who retired Johnson on a grounder to first to end the inning, gave up three hits in her remaining six innings and struck out three.

One of the three hits was Boyd’s third-inning double, the game’s only extra-base hit.
