Sundevil Invitational : Carter Is 2nd in Shotput; Noel 3rd in Pole Vault

For the first time this year, Kaleaph Carter of Edison High School saw someone else throw the shotput farther than he did.

Fallbrook High School’s Brent Noon, who earlier this year broke Carter’s state record for sophomores, beat Carter on the final throw of the day Saturday to win the event at the Sundevil Invitational Meet at Poway High School.

Noon’s throw went 59-feet 9-inches. Carter’s best of 59-3 was on his first try.

Both were sub-par efforts. Two weeks ago, Carter threw 63-2 3/4--the farthest in the nation this year as of Friday--and Noon had thrown 62-0 1/2, second-best in the country.

Carter, a senior, finished second in the state meet a year ago; Noon, then a freshman, finished seventh.

“That was not Kaleaph Carter,” said Carter, who called his effort “putrid.”

He continued: “It’s embarrassing to come to a meet and throw 59 feet, and I’m sure Brent Noon is embarrassed, too. That’s ridiculous. I start at 61 feet . . . but we have to remember, I’m focusing for the state meet.”

A teammate of Carter’s, David Noel, finished third in the pole vault by clearing 15-0. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame’s Tommy Parker won at 16-1, and Matt Warwick of Hesperia went 15-7.

On April 7, Noel cleared 16-4--the state’s best this year--in a dual meet with Westminster. A crosswind and a bruised knee hindered Noel on Saturday.

“I haven’t been able to get a good mark in a big meet,” Noel said. “At Arcadia I was coming down off the big high and went 15-0. I’m looking at Mt. SAC next week.”

In the 1,600 meters, Corona del Mar’s Eddie Lavelle finished third in 4 minutes 16.56 seconds, a career best by 4.5 seconds. Lavelle had the lead with 50 yards remaining but was passed by eventual winner Edgar Montez of Nogales (4:16.4). Greg Shryock, also of Corona del Mar, was sixth in 4:24.21.
