BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS:

Share

Don Mattingly: The New York Yankees’ first baseman failed to hit a home run in his first 76 at-bats. No surprise. Mattingly is a career .283 hitter in April, a .336 hitter over the other months. He has hit only 4 of his 123 career home runs in April. “I don’t know why that is,” Mattingly said. “Timing, I guess. I’m just a little off right now, that’s all. The month’s not over yet. There’s still time to do some damage.”

Rafael Santana: Blasted and benched by Manager Billy Martin for blowing a double play during the first week of the season, the Yankee shortstop has been in and out of the lineup and has asked to be traded. The Yankees should think twice. They are 9-3 with Santana in the lineup, 3-2 when he wasn’t. The New York Mets were 79-50 with Santana in the lineup last year and 13-20 when he wasn’t.

Mark McGwire: The Oakland Athletics’ first baseman hit 56 homers through his first 187 major league games or one every 3.3 games. Babe Ruth averaged a homer every 3.5 games, Hank Aaron every 4.3.

Shane Rawley: The Philadelphia Phillies’ left-hander was 17-6 and headed for the Cy Young Award after beating the Dodgers last Aug. 31. He is 0-8 with 3 no-decisions in 11 starts since.

Ken Williams: The Chicago White Sox third baseman, moving from center field, has an American League-leading 7 errors. Chicago fans are familiar with hot-corner transitions. The Cubs moved Keith Moreland from right field to third base last year, and he led the National League with 29 errors. The Cubs then moved Moreland to San Diego.
