Area Roundup : Top Western Racquetball Players to Compete in Seal Beach Qualifier

Top racquetball players from the western United States will compete this weekend in the Coors Light Marty Hogan tournament at the Rossmoore Athletic Club in Seal Beach. There will be 15 divisions in the tournament, which is scheduled for today through Sunday.

The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Amateur Racquetball Assn., is a qualifying event for the national tournament, which will be held in Las Vegas in August.

Admission is $5, with some of the proceeds going to the National Society to Prevent Blindness.

Irvine Lake, a man-made lake located in Trabuco Canyon, will open for a full night schedule beginning today.

The lake, which is open seven days a week at 6 a.m., will offer night fishing between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The Rams and Raiders will play a charity basketball game May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in UC Irvine’s Bren Center. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Hope House, a temporary residential facility in Irvine for substance abuse victims.

A Saddleback College football coaching clinic is scheduled for May 9 at 7 p.m. on the Saddleback College field. Check-in is at 6:45 p.m.

The clinic is open to all high school coaches in the Saddleback College recruiting district. Ken Swearingen, Saddleback coach, will head the clinic.

The Newport Outrigger Canoe Club will hold its 10th annual Cannery Race on May 14. Hawaiian-style outrigger canoes with six-member crews will be used, with the women’s leg of the race starting at 8 a.m. and the men’s race starting at 10:30.

The races will start at the beach at 18th Street in Newport Beach. The women crews will turn at the Balboa Pier and finish at 18th Street. The men crews will turn at the Newport Pier and then finish in front of at the Cannery Restaurant next to Lido Island.

Men’s and women’s volleyball teams comprising U.S. Olympians and All-Americans will play exhibition matches against men’s and women’s national teams from the Soviet Union at 5 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Sunday at Marina High School.

The Soviets will visit Orange County as a part of the “Volleyball for Peace Exchange.”

Registration for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Region 154-Cypress for the fall season will be held May 14, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and May 15, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Evaluations will be the same day as registration and players are asked to bring their cleats.

Boys and girls ages 5-18 may participate even if they do not live in Cypress. Registration is $35 with a birth certificate. The maximum fee is $98 per family. For more information call Bonnie Bohn at 761-0698.

Jeff Jacobs, the 1987 World Points champion and David Gordon, the 1986 world champion, will be featured at Jet Ski racing May 7-8 at the Long Beach Marine Stadium.

Registration for the Fullerton Rangers youth soccer club will be May 7 and May 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and May 9 and May 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Independence Park. Wally Joyner of the Angels and Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics will be guests of Cal State Fullerton baseball Coach Larry Cochell during this summer’s Titan Baseball Day Camp.

Two one-week sessions are scheduled for July 25-29 and Aug. 8-12 at Titan Field. All youths ages 8-17 are welcome to the baseball instruction camp, which will be assisted by high school and professional coaches.

Deric Ryals of Westminster defeated Mike Hernandez in a first-round knockout to win the super heavyweight title Saturday at the California State Golden Gloves boxing championships at Lynwood.

Ryals, 23, and a graduate of Garden Grove High School, advances to the national Golden Glove Boxing Championships May 14 at Omaha, Neb. Last week, Ryals (22-4), of the Westminster Boxing Club, defeated Patrick Freeman, the defending state champion, at the Southern California Golden Gloves regional meet.

Alice Watt of Anaheim placed 10th in the Race Across America Open West cycling race Sunday at Tucson, Ariz. The top 11 finishers qualified for the Race Across America transcontinental cycling race, starting June 20 at Huntington Beach.

Watt, 40, rode the 502-mile race in 34 hours 44 minutes, easily surpassing the 51-hour qualifying standard for the Race Across America. The race began 9 a.m. Saturday, and Watt, who rode continuously, finished Sunday at 8:44 p.m. She averaged 14.4 m.p.h.

Watt, a member of the Orange County Wheelmen, was the only woman in the 32-rider field.
