Oriole Victory Is Good News to Forum Crowd
The biggest cheers of the night at the Forum went to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kurt Rambis Friday night, but there was one other ovation of note: When public address announcer Lawrence Tanter gave a baseball score: Baltimore Orioles 9, Chicago White Sox 0.
That was the sweetest news of the night for one season ticket-holder, Barbara Robinson, wife of Oriole Manager Frank Robinson.
“I had been calling him after every loss,” she said, “but it was getting too expensive. I had to stop calling.
“He’s been strong, much stronger than I have.”
It wasn’t her idea that Frank Robinson return to managing.
“I told him not to take the job, but he wouldn’t listen,” she said with a laugh. “I wouldn’t do that to my best friend.”
At one point, she went to press row to take a phone call. Her husband, perhaps?
“No, that was my daughter,” she said.
