Prep Roundup : Austin Is the Key as Mater Dei Rallies Past St. Paul, 7-6

The Mater Dei High School baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit to beat St. Paul, 7-6, Saturday in an Angelus League game at Mater Dei.

Mater Dei, which is 17-2 overall, 9-2 in league and second-ranked by the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn., trailed by 6-0 in the first but chipped away at the lead and trailed, 6-5, entering the sixth.

Jim Austin, who was 4 for 4, knocked in the tying run with a double and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when St. Paul threw the ball away on a force play.

St. Paul is 10-7-1 and 5-6.

In other Angelus League baseball:

Servite 3, Pius X 0--All three runs scored by visiting Servite were unearned. In the first, Mike Robertson and Tom Szymanski scored on a dropped fly ball hit by Brian Criss, giving the Friars (15-5, 8-2) a 2-0 lead. Criss scored on a passed ball in the seventh, making it 3-0. Pius X is 1-13, 0-11.

In Sunset League baseball:

Huntington Beach 9, Westminster 1--Host Huntington Beach scored six runs in the second on eight straight singles. Huntington Beach is 15-6 and 6-5. Tim Wimbish (4-1) limited 10th-ranked Westminster to five hits. Darrin Vigallon went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs to lead the Oilers’ 11-hit attack. Westminster is 13-9 and 6-5.

In Sunset League softball:

Marina 1, Ocean View 0--Becky Toler scored the winning run for host Marina in the seventh. She singled, was bunted to second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder’s choice. Marina is 9-9 and 3-3.
