Roundup : Last-Place Valhalla Edges Santana, 11-10

Valhalla High School, the last-place baseball team in the Grossmont League, scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to upset fifth-ranked Santana, 11-10, Wednesday at Santana.

Mitch Lee led off the seventh for Valhalla with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored the winning run when Tom Wellington followed with a single.

Valhalla (7-15, 3-8) broke on top with 4 runs in the first inning, but Santana rallied and led after three innings, 9-8. Valhalla went back on top in the sixth with two runs, but Santana (16-6, 7-4) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Mark Iveson went the distance for Valhalla to pick up the victory.

In other Grossmont League games:

Helix 7, El Cajon Valley 0--Rick Navarro of No. 2 Helix threw a two-hitter and struck out 8 to keep his record perfect at 9-0. Damon Chase went 4 for 4 with an RBI, and Jason Ledford knocked in two runs for Helix (17-2, 10-0). Helix catcher Rick Page hit a home run in the second with the bases empty. El Cajon Valley fell to 6-14, 2-9.

Granite Hills 15, Monte Vista 7--Shane Boyd had three singles and a three-run homer for host Granite Hills (13-7, 7-4). Jon Rice (3-1) gained the victory in relief. Jeff Waymire drove in four runs and Pete Stacey three for Granite Hills. Monte Vista 11-12 and 4-6.

Mt. Miguel 7, El Capitan 6 (8 innings)--Despite Ken Jarvis’ home run, visiting Mt. Miguel raised its records to 6-13 and 5-5. El Capitan is 8-12 and 3-8.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Pasqual 12, Escondido 3--Mike Escarcega and Kevin Herde combined on a two-hitter and twin brothers Marc and Kevin Hecker hit home runs for San Pasqual (11-8, 7-2). Escondido is 11-10, 5-4.

Oceanside 6, Rancho Buena Vista 5--Dwayne Wilson singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth after the visitors had scored twice to take the lead. Tom Urso had a run-scoring single and a two-run home run for Oceanside (8-12, 3-6). Rancho Buena Vista is 7-13 and 3-6.

San Marcos 10, El Camino 9 (8 innings)--Tommy Morton tripled in three runs and scored the tying run on Marc Villalobos’ single in the seventh, and El Camino’s two errors in the eighth led to the game-winner for host San Marcos (11-6-2, 6-3).

Rick Spears hit a bases-empty home run for El Camino (2-16 and 1-8). Winning pitcher Villalobos (4-2) and Travis Beasley each had two RBIs.

Carlsbad 21, Ramona 6--Jeff Myers hit his sixth home run of the year--a three-run hit in the Lancers’ four-run fourth inning--and Carlsbad had 17 hits. Carlsbad is 16-4 and 9-0.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Poway 9, Vista 6--Visiting Poway (12-7, 6-2) had nine hits and six runs in the first inning to help sophomore Dan Miller (5-1) win.

San Dieguito 3, Fallbrook 1--Catcher Jack Minger tripled in two runs and singled as host San Dieguito (2-11, 1-5) beat Fallbrook (13-7, 5-3). Losing pitcher Jamie Willcox (6-3) hit a home run.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Morse 74, Serra 53--Stacy Thompson won three events to help Morse win the City Eastern League title. Thompson was victorious in the 100-yard dash (12.1 seconds), 330 hurdles (47.0) and triple jump (36-feet 6-inches). Amani Tyus of Morse won the 440 (1:01.9) and 880 (2:26.3).

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Morse 98, Serra 38--Michael Stevenson of Morse was a double winner in the 220 (23.0) and 440 (52.0). Morse’s Lincoln Kennedy also won two events, the shotput (48-11 1/2) and discus (144-9).
