THE PREPS : Roundup : Mission Viejo Boys and Girls Win South Coast Track Championships

Sheri Bertell, Suzanne Kerho and Lisa Fager won two events each to lead the Mission Viejo High School girls’ track and field team to an overwhelming victory Friday night in the South Coast League track and field championships at Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo (5-0 in league dual meets), co-champion with Capistrano Valley last year, won the girls’ division with 174 points. Capistrano Valley was second with 106, El Toro third (51), Irvine fourth (50), and Dana Hills and San Clemente tied for fifth with 41 each.

The Diablos also won the boys’ division with 122 points.

Dana Hills was second (100), followed by Irvine (96), Capistrano Valley (87), El Toro (46) and San Clemente (42).

In the girls’ meet, Bertell, named the sprint athlete of the meet at the Orange County Girls’ Track and Field Championships last Saturday, won the 100 meters in 12.56 seconds and the 200 in 25.58.

Bertell, a senior, also anchored the Diablos’ 400-meter relay team to victory. Mission Viejo won in 49.31, holding off Capistrano Valley (50.08) and third-place Irvine (50.77).

Kerho, sister of Steve Kerho, a former UCLA and Mission Viejo High standout, won the 300-meter low hurdles in 46.0, barely holding off San Clemente’s Jennifer Owens, who was second in 46.5.

Two hours later, Kerho won the 100-meter intermediate hurdles (14.51), again by holding off Owens, second at 15.41.

Fager won the high jump at 5-feet and the triple jump at 36-11 3/4. Teammate Heather Hutchinson was second in the triple jump at 35-8.

Mission Viejo’s girls also received victories from sophomore Kristin Dunn in the shotput (38-4) and the 1,600-meter relay team (4:10.36).

Other winners in the girls’ division included: Irvine’s Barbara Kozlowski in the 1,600 (5:22.24), Dana Hills’ Kirstin Quigley in the 3,200 (11:15.4) and Capistrano Valley’s Laurinda Mulhaupt, who defended her 1987 league championship in the 800 meters by winning in 2:21.79.

In the boys’ division, Greg Lamb won both the 800 meters (1:57.25) and the 1,600 meters (4:23.57) to lead Mission Viejo (5-0).

In both events, Lamb had to hold off late surges by Dana Hills’ Javier Barrera. Barrera, who won the 3,200 meters (9:32.9) less than an hour before the 800, was second in that event in 1:58.70.

Barrera also finished second in the 1,600 (4:23.9) and ran a 52.3 split in anchoring the Dolphins’ fourth-place 1,600-meter relay team.

Mission Viejo also received victories from Jason Holloway in the 200 (22.89) and Eric Pryce in the high jump (6-6).

El Toro’s Rob Boldt, one of the county’s top sprinters, helped the Chargers with two victories despite an earlier false start (and disqualification) in the 100 meters. Boldt won the long jump at 21-2 1/2 and the triple jump at 45-7 3/4.

Capistrano Valley’s Joe White recorded a rare double victory in winning the 100 meters (11.32) and the 400 meters (50.19), events separated by only 20 minutes.

Other boys’ winners included: Dana Hills’ Pat Borkheim in the discus (156-9), Capistrano Valley’s Rick Fratus in the 110-meter hurdles (15.69) and Irvine’s Dave Webb in the shotput (52-8 1/2).

The top three finishers in each event qualified for the Southern Section 4-A track and field preliminaries next Saturday at Gahr High School in Cerritos.

In the Sea View track and field championships:

In the boys’ division:

Jim Robbins of Corona del Mar set a league record in the 1,600 meters, winning in a personal-best 4:11.6. Greg Whitely of University ran 4:13.3 in 1985.

Robbins held off Newport Harbor’s Jim Geerlings (4:15.9) and teammate Eddie Lavelle (4:22.5). Robbins also won the 800 meters (1:57.8). Lavelle was second (1:58.1) and Tustin’s Eric Hook third (1:59).

Lavelle, a junior, won the 3,200 (9:25.8), holding off University’s Aaron Vali (9:29.6).

R.W. Henson of Newport Harbor won the pole vault in 15-3, a personal record by 9 inches.

Corona del Mar won the meet with 163 1/2 points, Saddleback was second (105 1/2), and Newport Harbor third (100).

In the girls’ division:

Leslie Cashion won three events to lead Corona del Mar, which won the meet with 183 points. Estancia was second (82) and Tustin third (79).

Cashion, a senior, won the 800 (2:19.2), the 1,600 (5:16.2) and the 3,200 (11:32.9). D’Layne Kerr won the 200 (25.2) and the 400 (57.0) to help the Sea Kings at Irvine.

Laurie Lapendresse of Tustin was second in the 800 at 2:22, and sophomore Erin Cunningham was second in the 1,600 at 5:22 and second in the 3,200 at 11:35.

In the Freeway League boys’ swim finals:

Will Davis won two events, as Sunny Hills captured the league finals with 379 1/2 points. Fullerton was second (299), Sonora third (203), Buena Park fourth (74), Troy fifth (36) and La Habra sixth (35 1/2).

Davis won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.68) and 100-yard backstroke (58.88). Sunny Hills also got strong performances for Ernie Fancuberta, who won the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.17), Andrews Verneuil, who finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.72) and Dan Dela Cruz, who won the 100-yard breaststroke.

K.C Pearce of Sonora won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.23) and was second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.70). Jeff Lemnitzer of Fullerton won the 50-yard freestyle (22.39) and teammate Morgan Courtney won the 100--yard butterfly (55.34)

In the Freeway League girls’ swim finals:

Joyce Lightfoot of Sunny Hills set a league record in the 500-yard freestyle, as the Lancers won with 381 points. Sonora was second (234), Troy was third (189), La Habra fourth (89), Fullerton fifth (60) and Buena Park sixth (26).

Lightfoot swam a 5:00.82 in the 500 freestyle, which not only set the league record but will get All-American consideration. She also finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.36).

Kelly Huffman of Sonora won the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.61).

In Orange League tennis:

Valencia 15, Anaheim 3--Danny Yu won his three singles sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, to lead Valencia (18-2, 15-0) at Pearson Park in Anaheim. Valencia’s doubles team of Eric Flint and Colin Robinson also swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0. Khanh Nguyen and Andy Sprague won two of three sets for Anaheim (14-4, 11-4).

Western 10, Brea-Olinda 8--Jack Wei won two of three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, to lead Western (8-12, 5-10) at Brea-Olinda.

In Sea View League tennis:

University 16, Estancia 4--Aaron Nartz and Steve Lappin swept their doubles sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-3, to lead University (14-6, 7-3) at Estancia. Jaime Price won his singles sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, for University, which finished tied for second place with Corona del Mar.

In South Coast League tennis:

Mission Viejo 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Mission Viejo (4-6 in league) tied Capistrano Valley (4-6 in league) for third place with the victory, and the teams meet today at 1:30 p.m. at the San Juan Racquet Club at 1:30 to play off for third place and the final playoff spot in the league.

El Toro 13, Irvine 5--El Toro (16-7, 8-2) won 8 of 9 doubles sets en route to victory at Irvine. Dave Mosh and Tim Fitzgerald won their sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, while Brian Delbenes and David Mullarkey also swept, 7-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Dana Hills 18, San Clemente 0--Estaban Saba swept his singles sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, as host Dana Hills (10-0, 17-3) won its fourth consecutive league title.

In Empire League tennis:

El Dorado 15, Cypress 5--Sherman Hsieh swept his sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host El Dorado (11-5, 8-2), which finished second in league to Los Alamitos. Larry Queen swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and Craig O’Neill swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, also for El Dorado.

In Garden Grove League volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Tony Price had 16 kills, and Tom Potwora had 10 kills and 5 blocks for host La Quinta (13-4, 12-0), which ends the league season undefeated.

In Pacific Coast League volleyball:

Trabuco Hills 3, Laguna Hills 2--Tim Mellado had 31 kills as host Trabuco Hills (5-9, 4-8) rallied to win, 14-16, 15-8, 10-15, 15-11, 16-14.

In Sea View League volleyball:

Corona del Mar 3, University 0--Tom Schriber had 11 kills, and Will Hill had 7 digs to lead host Corona del Mar to a 15-5, 16-14, 15-13 sweep. Corona del Mar ends 11-5 and 9-1 in league.
