Prep Roundup : Wasikowski’s First-Inning Homers Lead Los Alamitos

Mark Wasikowski hit two home runs in a nine-run first inning as Los Alamitos High School defeated Cypress, 11-0, Wednesday in an Empire League baseball game at Cypress.

Wasikowski, a junior shortstop, led off the game with a homer and hit a grand slam to cap the scoring in the first. He also had a double. Greg Pirkl, who was hit by pitches in his first two at-bats, hit a home run and two doubles for Los Alamitos (19-6 overall, 10-4 in league play). Winston Wolf (9-1) threw a 3-hitter for the victory. Cypress is 8-18, 2-12.

In another Empire League game:

Loara 8, Katella 7--Craig Clayton had 2 hits and 3 runs-batted in, and Ken Williams and Dan Rodriguez had 2 hits and 2 RBIs each for host Loara (11-13, 5-9). Jim Delehoy (3-0) got the victory. Katella took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Loara scored five runs in the second. Katella then took a 7-5 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth, but Loara rallied for three in the bottom of the fourth and held on. Katella is 9-15, 3-11.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 7, Pacifica 4--John Park went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs to lead La Quinta at home. La Quinta (22-4, 13-0), which clinched the league championship last week, has won 19 straight games. Winning pitcher James Marquez (8-3), who allowed 6 hits and struck out 5, has won eight straight. Pacifica is 16-7, 9-4.

Rancho Alamitos 16, Kennedy 5--Paul Lee had two hits, including a grand slam in the third inning, to lead visiting Rancho Alamitos (14-11, 8-5), which moves into a third-place tie with Kennedy (14-12, 8-5). Roddy McCall had 2 hits and 5 RBIs for Rancho Alamitos. Ryan Flanagan (8-1) worked 5 for the victory.

Santiago 3, Garden Grove 2 (9 innings)--Santiago (12-14, 7-6) scored an unearned run on a dropped fly ball in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Steve Larson’s two-out single scored Mike Barry for the wining run. Larson was 4 for 5 and Carlos Leon had 3 hits. Leon (5-4) pitched 9 innings for the victory; Marc Lung took the loss for Garden Grove (5-16, 1-12).

Bolsa Grande 11, Los Amigos 4--Eric Schreifels threw a 7-hitter with 12 strikeouts for visiting Bolsa Grande (7-16, 4-9). Schreifels set the single-season school record for strikeouts with 84. Chip Kovach hit a home run for Bolsa Grande. Los Amigos is 4-20, 1-12.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 10, Savanna 6--Mike Edwards had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and an RBI to lead visiting Valencia. Keef Leasure had 2 hits, including his sixth home run, and scored 3 runs, and John Daugherty had a hit and 3 RBIs for Valencia (14-6-1, 10-3-1).

Anaheim 16, Brea-Olinda 12--Catcher Ryan Jara was 3 for 4 with a home run and 7 RBIs to lead Anaheim at Brea. The victory clinches third place and a playoff spot for Anaheim (13-10, 9-5). Anaheim’s John Barber went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Western 3, Magnolia 1--Winning pitcher Mark Holiday (5-2) allowed 6 hits and struck out 8 at Western. Western’s Miles Roberson and Les Garrett each went 2 for 3. Western is 16-8, 10-3-1; Magnolia is 8-13-1, 6-7-1.

In nonleague baseball:

Claremont 8, Pacific Shores 7--Derek Evans (5-1) pitched two innings for the victory and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.

In Academy League softball:

Liberty Christian 19, Newport Christian 7--Liberty Christian scored 11 runs in the fifth inning on 5 hits, 7 walks and 3 errors at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

In Sea View League boys’ tennis individual championships:

Newport Harbor’s Chris Rabbitt defeated teammate Brett Hansen, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to win the league’s singles championship. Rabbitt and Hansen had each gone undefeated during league play. In the doubles final, brothers Scott and Rob Atkin of Corona del Mar defeated teammates Doug Schulein and Richard Han, 7-5, 6-4.

In South Coast League boys’ tennis individual championships:

Dana Hills freshman Ben Stevens defeated his brother, junior Chris Stevens, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the singles final. Neil Grover and Stan Sanders of Dana Hills defeated El Toro’s Dave Mosh and Tim Fitzgerald, 6-3, 6-1, to win the doubles championship.
