Fire Sprinklers and Disney Hotel
After the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel fire, the Disneyland Hotel held mandatory fire safety meetings for all its employees. The Anaheim fire chief presented a slide show of the devastating effects fire can have on a poorly constructed high-rise building.
One of the primary failures was the sprinkler system, which was attached only to the dry wall of the hallway ceilings. As the fire spread, the sprinklers came on, the dry wall got wet and the whole sprinkler system fell to the floor.
A Disneyland Hotel official took the podium after the fire chief and assured us that the Marina and Sierra towers would have sprinkler systems installed soon. These are the two 11-story towers without sprinkler systems referred to in the Times editorial “Fire Sprinkler Systems” (May 15).
The Disneyland Hotel is under new ownership and management in 1988. Let’s hope they’re more honest and compassionate toward their public and their employees than their predecessors were.
