MICHELLE GRANGER

VALENCIA -- PITCHER Granger (22-4), a senior, struck out 449 batters in 217 innings, increasing her national record for career strikeouts to 1,635. She pitched nine no-hitters--including three perfect games--adding to her national career record (36 no-hitters). She gave up just one earned run for a career ERA of 0.10. She finished her high-school career by striking out 40 batters in 25 innings in a semifinal loss to La Mirada. Granger will attend California.

Ernie Franco, Kennedy High School’s designated hitter, was omitted from the first team of the All-Garden Grove League baseball team published in Wednesday’s Times.

TERRY CARPENTER

EDISON -- PITCHER Carpenter (13-7), a senior, struck out 411 batters in 228 innings--including 43 in a 23-inning playoff loss to Burroughs--to bring her career strikeout total to 793. She had an 0.09 ERA and pitched six no-hitters--including one perfect game--and five one-hitters and was named the Sunset League’s most valuable player. She will attend Fresno State.

CHERYL LONGEWAYKENNEDY -- PITCHER Longeway (23-3), a freshman, pitched 18 shutouts, including 5 in the playoffs, to lead Kennedy to the Southern Section 3-A title. In the 1-0 championship-game victory over La Mirada, Longeway gave up three hits and struck out seven. She struck out 235 batters in 168 innings and had an 0.37 ERA. Longeway, the Garden Grove League’s most valuable player, batted .270 and had a .993 fielding average.

SHANNON DOLAN

FOUNTAIN VALLEY -- CATCHER Dolan, a freshman, broke school single-season records for runs scored with 17 (the previous record was 13) and hits with 32 (the previous record was 25). She also set a school record for fielding average (.996), and threw out 10 of 11 runners attempting to steal. Dolan batted a team-leading .311 to lead Fountain Valley to the Sunset League championship. She also had 10 RBIs.

DEANNA MAYES

KENNEDY -- FIRST BASEMAN Mayes, a senior first baseman, led the 3-A champions in hitting with a .333 average, although she missed the last three playoff games with a severely bruised thigh. She scored 18 runs and had 26 hits, 5 of them triples, and drove in 12 runs. The team captain will attend the University of Nebraska.

NIKKI LEWIS

CANYON -- INFIELDER Lewis, a senior second baseman, batted .373 to lead all Canyon hitters. A three-year varsity starter, Lewis had 34 hits and scored 18 runs and also led the Canyon defense with a .968 fielding average. Lewis, who was named the Comanche of the year and plays for the California Raiders 18-and-under softball team, will attend Cal State Fullerton.

SUZIE BARNETT

VILLA PARK -- INFIELDER Barnett, a three-year varsity starter, led Villa Park with a .348 batting average and a .474 on-base percentage. She had 31 hits, including 8 doubles and 4 home runs. The senior shortstop scored 20 runs, had 18 RBIs and a .933 fielding percentage. She will attend California.

MISSY GYDE

KENNEDY -- INFIELDER Gyde, a junior shortstop, batted .219 with 21 hits. She was a key hitter in clutch situations, driving in 21 runs and scoring 14. Gyde was selected to the All-Southern Section 4-A first team last year and this year was a first team All-Garden Grove League selection. She had a .922 fielding percentage this season.

LEAH MILLER

LAGUNA HILLS -- OUTFIELDER Miller, a senior, batted .348 in league play and was named to the All-Pacific Coast League first team. She hit .258 overall. Miller, who helped Laguna Hills to a share of the 1987 2-A title by making a game-winning catch, did not make an error this season and had 25 putouts. She will attend UC Santa Barbara.

RENEE PINA

MISSION VIEJO -- OUTFIELDER Pina, a junior, batted .451 and was 6 for 9 in the playoffs. The Diablos’ leadoff batter, she scored 30 runs and had a .600 on-base percentage. She had 1 home run and 6 RBIs, stole 13 bases and had a .981 fielding percentage. Pina was an All-South Coast League first-team selection.

JAMIE WALKER

OCEAN VIEW -- OUTFIELDER Walker, a senior, batted .234 with 3 home runs. The center fielder made three game-winning catches and assisted on two double plays. Walker hit a two-run home run in Ocean View’s upset of top-seeded Gahr in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs.

IVY PINKERTON

WESTERN -- UTILITY Pinkerton, a junior, split time at shortstop and on the pitching mound. She was 6-1 as a pitcher and had an 0.64 ERA, with two one-hitters and one perfect game, which she pitched in the opening round of the 3-A playoffs. As a shortstop, she had a .915 fielding percentage. Pinkerton batted .239, with 21 hits in 91 at-bats.

MICHELLE SHEAN

SAN CLEMENTE -- DESIGNATED HITTER Shean, a senior, led her team in batting (.365) and had 31 hits, 26 RBIs and 7 home runs. The cleanup hitter had a .413 on-base average and struck out only 10 times. As a catcher, Shean threw out 13 runners and picked off 14. The two-time most valuable player of the South Coast League will attend Oklahoma State.
