An Anaheim man who was shot by authorities after he drove a road grader through Chino Airport, damaging planes and scattering ground crews, was in serious but stable condition Wednesday, a spokesman at San Bernardino County Medical Center Hospital said.

Randy LaComb, 37, was shot several times below the waist by sheriff’s deputies and Chino police trying to stop him from crashing into fuel tanks and the command tower, said Ulla Bauer, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Unable to stop LaComb for 20 minutes, authorities at the airport decided to shoot at him, Bauer said. “There didn’t appear to be any way they could stop the vehicle soon,” he added.

LaComb faces charges ranging from malicious mischief and grand theft to assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder because he endangered many lives during the incident, Bauer said. Authorities have not determined what motivated LaComb, Bauer said.

The 35-minute incident began about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when LaComb allegedly stole the grader from a construction site in Chino Hills. He drove the big machine 6 miles to the airport, forcing vehicles and bicycles off the road along the way.
