Jimmy Jones of the Padres had a good day Thursday, due in part to a bad day by Jeff Treadway of the Reds.

Jones held Cincinnati to three hits in eight innings, and San Diego scored three unearned runs in the third inning--set up by two Treadway errors at second base--for a 3-1 victory in San Diego.

Jones (5-5) walked two and struck out three, and Mark Davis pitched the ninth inning to gain his career-high eighth save. Ron Robinson dropped to 2-5.

With Cincinnati leading, 1-0, in the third, Robinson retired the first two batters. Tony Gwynn grounded to Treadway, who misplayed the ball for an error, then threw wildly to first base for another error, allowing Gwynn to reach second.

Treadway then lost John Kruk’s fly ball in the sun, and the ball dropped for a double as Gwynn scored the tying run.

Randy Ready singled to left field, scoring Kruk for a 2-1 lead. Ready scored later in the inning for the final run.

The teams split their four-game series.

Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 3--Barry Bonds’ two-run, two-out single in the ninth inning gave the Pirates the victory at Pittsburgh.

Cub reliever Goose Gossage entered in the ninth and yielded consecutive doubles to Darnell Coles and pinch-hitter Sid Bream, cutting Chicago’s lead to 3-2. After Frank DiPino (0-3) relieved Gossage, Bream moved to third base on Mike LaValliere’s ground-out.

After Denny Gonzalez walked, pinch-hitter R.J. Reynolds grounded to third, and Bream was tagged out in a rundown. Gonzalez took third and Reynolds second on the play. Bonds then singled to right field, making a winner of Jim Gott, who pitched 1 innings.

San Francisco 6, Atlanta 4--Winning pitcher Mike LaCoss started a four-run third inning with a two-out single, raising his average to .318, as the Giants beat the Braves at San Francisco.

LaCoss (5-4) gave up 5 hits in 6 innings and won his third straight decision. At the plate, he was 1 for 1 with two sacrifice bunts.

Texas 5, Oakland 2--At Arlington, Tex., Steve Buechele hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as unbeaten Jeff Russell and the Rangers handed the Athletics their fifth straight loss.

The slump is the longest of the season for the American League West-leading A’s.

Russell (5-0) gave up one earned run on six hits, struck out four and walked two in pitching his first complete game this season.

Storm Davis (5-3) lost for the first time in 11 career decisions against the Rangers.

Oakland’s Jose Canseco hit his 15th home run, a 457-foot blast, to give the A’s a 1-0 first-inning lead.

Detroit 6, Cleveland 2--Pinch-hitter Luis Salazar singled home Jim Walewander to ignite a four-run ninth inning, giving the Tigers the victory at Cleveland.

With the score tied, 2-2, in the ninth, Darrell Evans drew a one-out walk off starter Tom Candiotti (6-5). Walewander ran for Evans and advanced to second as Chet Lemon lined a single off Candiotti’s right shin. Candiotti walked off the field, and Dan Schatzeder relieved.

Salazar lined a 2-and-1 pitch to center, scoring Walewander and advancing Lemon to second. After Ray Knight’s ground-out moved the runners to second and third, Tom Brookens hit a two-run single to right. Brookens scored on Gary Pettis’ double off Bill Laskey.

Minnesota 7, Seattle 5--Dan Gladden led off the game with a home run and added a run-scoring triple as the Twins beat the Mariners at Seattle.

Of Gladden’s four homers this season, three have been leading off games. His triple capped a three-run sixth inning against Mark Langston (5-6), putting Minnesota ahead, 5-2.

Bert Blyleven (4-6), gave up two runs on three hits in the second inning before retiring the next 13 batters. Alvin Davis broke the streak in the seventh with his 11th home run.
