Former Banning Baseball Star Named Toro Athletic Director

Former Banning High School baseball star Dan Guerrero has been appointed athletic director at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Guerrero, 36, has been acting athletic director at the Carson school since January when Sue Carberry became interim vice president of student affairs. Carberry has since left the school.

The appointment was not a surprise, since Carberry had been grooming Guerrero, whom she hired in 1983 as an assistant, to replace her. However, a search committee appointed by President John Brownell interviewed four other candidates.

Guerrero said he expects “a very busy summer.” He said his priority is to hire a baseball coach and a women’s basketball coach. Both positions were vacated this spring. Guerrero said he expects the positions to be filled by July 15.

On the loss of highly regarded baseball Coach Andy Lopez to Pepperdine, Guerrero said: “There’s no reason to believe we can’t pick up on what Andy built and go on from there.” He said he will expect the new women’s basketball coach to take the Toros into the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. postseason tournament for the first time in the school’s history. As for remaining programs, he said he expects continued success.

“The whole program is on an upswing,” he said.

An all-City baseball choice in 1969, Guerrero, an infielder, also starred at UCLA and in an Italian professional league. He held a career batting average of .320 in college. In 1970 he was a member of the U. S. National Team.

A resident of Long Beach, Guerrero received a bachelor of arts in history from UCLA and a master of arts from Dominguez Hills.
