A man was shot twice about 7 p.m. Saturday when he and a friend were approached by a woman trying to rob them at 30th Street and Imperial Avenue, police said.

The victim, Paul Phipps, in his upper 20s, was shot in the left elbow and left lung. He was listed in stable condition at Mercy Hospital.

Phipps and a companion were on their way to pick up another friend when they stopped their car at the intersection in Southeast San Diego. Police said a young woman then walked up to the car and attempted to rob the pair. When they resisted, she pulled out a .22-caliber revolver and started firing, police said.
