Firefighters brought under control a 17,000-acre forest fire that had burned within 3 1/2 miles of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and forced the evacuation of 1,000 people. The fire in South Dakota’s Custer State Park was believed to have been caused by lightning, officials said. About 60% of the park was reopened, but by today, all main roads in the 73,000-acre park will be opened, officials said.
