San Diego-area gymnasts, all representing the San Diego Gymnastics Center, swept the top three all-around finishes in the boys’ Class IV (ages 7-9) competition at UC San Diego.

Jesse Campanaro was the overall winner, finishing with a 50.7 point total, 60.0 being a perfect score. He took third on the floor exercise and second on the pommel horse, still rings, high bar and the vault.

Scott Bennett, with a 50.5, finished second in the all-around, winning the pommel horse and the parallel bars and taking third in the high bar.

David Duriga, third in the all-around with 49.4, took a first on the high bar and a second on the parallel bars.

Anthony Gostaniano, also competing in Class IV, finished first in the still rings and third on the parallel bars.

In Class I (ages 16-18) competition, Jim Stewart was the boys’ all-around winner with a 51.1 point total. Stewart won the pommel horse and the vault and was second in the rings, the parallel bars and the high bar.

Scott Wong took first in the pommel horse and high bar and third on the vault and parallel bars in the Class II (ages 13-15) competition. Brian Davies was third on floor exercise and James McCready was first on the rings.

In the Class III (ages 10-12) segment, San Diego captured three thirds, P.J. Derisi on the rings, Ben Klayman on the vault and Mike Manzano on the parallel bars.

Bryce Schanback was the winner of the floor exercise event in the 10-15 age group of Class IV competition. Two second place finishes went to Trent Selah on the rings and Eric Ford on the pommel horse.

Scott Rasmussen scored two goals Saturday, but the San Diego water polo team was defeated by the Greater Orange County team, 18-5, at the Jewish Community Center.

Rasmussen is a two-meter man from University of San Diego High School. Greg Rogers, Todd Kroepel and Steve Ostrum, all from Poway High School, scored a goal each to round out the San Diego team’s scoring.

“The Greater Orange County team is much more experienced and better-conditioned,” said Greg Ormsby, water polo coach at Palomar College and the tournament director. “Plus, they’ve been playing together as a group for a long time.”

In badminton competition, Binh Lam of San Diego defeated Eric Silaphet of Covina, 15-7, 15-6 in a semifinal game in the junior singles division at the Federal Building in Balboa Park. Consolation finals begin a 9 today, with the championships finals slated to begin at noon.
