State Games Roundup : Nomad Soccer Teams Dominate Competition

The San Diego Nomads soccer club won gold medals in three age groups as the first California State Games concluded, with the exception of the tennis finals.

The Nomads won the boys’ under-19, under-16 and under-14 divisions. In the under-19 division, the Nomads allowed only one goal in three games. In the under-16 division, they outscored opponents, 9-1. In the under-14 group, the Nomads won their three matches by 15-0.

San Diego teams won golds in all divisions of soccer, except the boys’ under-12. El Cajon won the girls’ under-19 with a 1-0 victory over the San Dieguito Surf. Villa Bratz won the girls’ under-12 division.

Faith Yakel of National City won three roller skating medals in the girls’ 9-12 division. Yakel won a silver in the figure and singles events. She teamed with Justin Hall for a bronze in the team dance category.

Bao Truong of La Mesa won a gold in the boys’ 9-12 solo dance and a silver in the 13-and-over singles.

Barny Morlock and Janis Grebbieu won a gold in the 25-and-over team dance event, and Morlock had a silver in the men’s figure.

The Padres defeated the Dodgers, 4-1 to win the baseball gold medal. The Padres consist of players from San Diego and Orange counties. The Dodgers are high school players from Los Angeles.

The teams were sectioned by area code, and the Padres won the first area code tournament last year in Lodi. The tournament was run in conjunction with the California Games this year.

Kristen Walls, a high school All-American from Monte Vista, won a gold medal in the girls’ 16-18 one-meter diving competition with 375.85 points. Erin Hoese, a high school All-American from La Jolla, finished fourth.

Ann French of San Diego teamed with Joy Kitzmiller to win a gold medal in badminton. French and Kitzmiller, from Manhattan Beach, defeated Terri Lira and Evika von Heiland of Long Beach, 15-4, 15-11.

Kitzmiller won three gold medals in badminton, winning the women’s singles and mixed doubles.

Wally Foy won an All-San Diego men’s master’s singles final, defeating Joe Silverman, 15-5, 15-3.

The tennis finals will be completed today.
