Two fast-moving brush fires, within a mile of each other, threatened La Jolla homes near Interstate 5 on Monday afternoon.

More than 30 San Diego firefighters responded to one of the blazes, on the northbound side of the freeway near Gilman Road, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Stewart. The 1:30 p.m. fire partly burned a roof at a home at 2517 Angell Ave. and consumed about six to eight acres.

Firefighters had to call in aerial support to stop the second blaze 90 minutes later, which burned on the west side of the freeway near Ardath Road, Stewart said. That fire burned about 10 acres, he said.

The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating both blazes, he said.
