Drossin Doubles Gold Medal Total in Maccabee Games

Deena Drossin of Agoura Hills won her third and fourth gold medals of the Maccabee Games in Chicago on Tuesday with victories in the 400-meter relay and 1,500 meters to lead area members of the Los Angeles Maccabee Athletic Club.

Drossin, who attends Agoura High, won the 800 and 3,000 meters earlier in the two-week competition. She won the 3,000 meters in 4 minutes, 55.06 seconds.

Drossin teamed with Cheryl Cohler of Northridge, Tracy Ingel of Chatsworth and Lauren Goldstein of Westlake Village in the relay.

Cohler, Goldstein and Ingel also took a silver medal in the 400 relay in 53.8 seconds. Cohler took a bronze in the long jump at 15 feet, 6 inches.

In softball, Alicia Zinner of Thousand Oaks threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 in an 8-1 win over Cleveland. Cari Silverman of West Hills had three hits and five runs batted in.

Led by Jason Farrell of West Hills (18 points), the boys’ basketball team raised its record to 4-0 with a 98-56 win over Detroit. Chris Sanger of Northridge had nine rebounds. L. A. advances to the quarterfinal round today.

In soccer, Los Angeles defeated Philadelphia, 4-0, in the quarterfinals to improve to 5-0. Co-captain Meir Cohen of Tarzana scored two goals for L. A., which has outscored its opponents, 13-0.

In girls’ basketball, L. A. defeated Boston, 41-40, in overtime. Julie Koppekin of Tarzana, Melissa Gische of Westlake Village and Mellissa Hensen of Granada Hills are team members.
