Train Derailment, Fires Blamed on Storms
Thunderstorms which dumped up to 2 inches of rain in the Southern California deserts Monday were blamed for a train derailment near Victorville, flooded homes and several fires, authorities said.
A 60-car Southern Pacific freight train derailed in the San Bernardino County community of Phelan after a flash flood washed away a culvert and undermined the tracks, said California Department of Forestry Capt. Steve Humeston. No one was injured.
“It was one of a whole set of floodings we’ve had since the rain,” Humeston said. “There have been numerous washouts of roads and a few minor traffic accidents.”
Authorities in Wrightwood reported several flooded homes, lightning strikes and small brush fires which were quickly controlled.
