Clayton Wins Balboa Park Cross Country Race

Matt Clayton outran Thom Hunt by 19 seconds to win the men’s division at the 24th Balboa Park cross country championships Saturday.

Clayton’s time of 19 minutes 30 seconds over four miles broke Hunt’s course record by five seconds.

In the women’s division, Sandy Blakeslee (23:42) defeated Bruni Oonagh by seven seconds.

In the team competition, the “B” Team defeated the Chart House in the men’s open competition and San Diego State beat the Chart House in women’s open. San Diego Track Club won the men’s masters and women’s juniors.

VOLLEYBALL

Rachel Vetter and Diana Clintworth had 27 and 25 kills over two matches as UC San Diego won the Fresno-Pacific Earlybird championship. UCSD defeated Chapman College, 15-12, 7-15, 15-4, in the championship.

In the semifinal, the Tritons beat Lewis & Clark, 15-8, 13-15, 15-13. Vetter, the tournament’s most valuable player, and Clintworth were named to the all-tournament team. UCSD is 6-0.

The University of San Diego (1-3) women lost two matches in the William & Mary Invitational at Williamsburg, Va. George Washington defeated USD, 15-7, 7-15, 9-15, 11-15. Virginia Tech beat the Toreros, 5-15, 12-15, 13-15.

BODYBOARDING

Kevin Cerv of Leucadia and 11 other professionals advanced to the semifinals of the ninth annual Morey Boogie National Bodyboarding Championships at the Oceanside Pier.

Cerv, Cameron Steele (San Clemente), Jay Reale (Maryland) and Hawaiians Dean Marzol, Keith Sasaki and Danny Kim will compete in one semifinal beginning at 7 a.m. today The other will feature four-time world champion Mike Stewart (Hawaii), Larry and Lynn Laumann (Goleta), David Cunniff (Orange) and Hawaiians Ron Jarvis and Ben Severson.

In the women’s open division, defending champion Glenda Kozlowski, 14, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, leads a group of six qualifiers for the final.

Semifinals will be followed by finals in each division today.

SOCCER

The U.S. International University men’s team lost its season opener at home, 2-0, to Fresno State. Robert Bent and Karl Ingemar scored second-half goals for Fresno State.

HORSESHOES

On the first day of the California State Championships at Balboa Park, Jay Schneider won the men’s senior division and Keith Kecskes, Ryan Camren, Bob Harris, Mark Perkins and Lynn Bradley won other men’s classes. Nancy Lamoureaux and Chris Gori won women’s classes.
