Rau Loses Opener at Canyon

Bob Rau’s coaching debut at Canyon High School wasn’t exactly what he had in mind. Corona stopped a 17-game losing streak Thursday by defeating Canyon 22-6, in front of 400 at El Modena High School.

Rau, who had won four league titles in the past six years at La Habra, watched Canyon fumble the ball five times, resulting in two Corona touchdowns.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Rau said. “I’m not surprised at our start. We have a lot of people in new positions and bound to make some mistakes. I know we’ll be back.”

Corona senior Kevin Wade ran for two touchdowns, finishing with 37 yards in 8 carries. Gabe Rincon scored the other Corona touchdown on a three-yard run around right end midway in the second quarter. Rincon finished with 67 yards rushing in 13 carries.

Canyon’s only bright spot was an 80-yard touchdown pass from Todd Burns to halfback Dan Puskas with 9:03 left. The Comanches were held to only 15 yards rushing and were outgained in total offense, 226 to 116.
