Southland Roundup : CS Northridge Flattens San Francisco St., Again

Albert Fann rushed 19 times for 133 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Cal State Northridge rolled up 497 yards in offense as the Matadors routed San Francisco State, 48-0, Saturday afternoon at San Francisco.

Cal State Northridge (2-0), which has outscored the Golden Gators, 130-0, in the teams’ past three meetings, drove for touchdowns on its first two possessions and led at the half, 28-0. The Matadors had 216 yards and 281 yards rushing, forced 2 fumbles and held San Francisco State to 156 total yards.

Fann, a sophomore, scored on runs of 9, 22 and 3 yards, while quarterback Rob Huffman completed 8 of 10 passes for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cal State Hayward 21, UC Santa Barbara 7--Quarterback Tom Duarte rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown to lead the Pioneers to nonconference victory Saturday at Hayward.

UC Santa Barbara took a 7-0 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter on a 10-yard scoring pass from quarterback Mike Curtius to running back Ross Bauer.

But Duarte, operating the wishbone, scored on a 45-yard run with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter to cut Santa Barbara’s lead to 7-6.

The Pioneers (1-1) outgained UC Santa Barbara (0-1), 333-144.

Cal Lutheran 17, Sonoma State 13--Quarterback Jim Bees completed 20 of 40 passes for 233 yards, including touchdowns of 41 and 3 yards, to lead the Kingsmen to a nonconference win at Cal Lutheran.

The Kingsmen (1-0) managed only 3 yards rushing, but overcame an early 3-0 deficit to lead, 17-3, in the third quarter. Sonoma State, which outgained Cal Lutheran, 278-236, is 0-1.

Cameron (Okla.) 20, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 14--Wide receiver Gary Palmer recovered a fumble in the end zone following a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo interception and botched pitch with no time remaining to lift the Aggies to a come-from-behind victory before a crowd of 6,765 at San Luis Obispo.

Azusa Pacific 17, Occidental 13--Backup quarterback Brian Hunt threw for two fourth-quarter touchdowns--including the game winner with 30 seconds left--to lead the Cougars at Occidental.

Hunt came on in the second quarter and completed 10 of 17 passes for 109 yards, including 7 straight on the final drive, which began on the Azusa Pacific 25-yard line and ended with Hunt’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Brent Hamm.
