Oregon Beats San Diego State in Volleyball Title Match

San Diego State could not make it two victories in a row over 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks, who defeated the Aztecs, 15-13, 15-12, 15-7, in the championship match of the Cal State Fullerton Tournament.

Unranked SDSU had defeated Oregon in pool play and sent the Ducks into the losers’ bracket.

“I think we got tired, and they were playing very good defense,” Aztec Coach Rudy Suwara said.

The tournament was still a success for SDSU, which also upset third-ranked Nebraska, 15-6, 19-17, 15-5 in the semifinals.

The tournament matches were the first SDSU had played since opening the season with a 3-0 loss to fifth-ranked UCLA.

Jackie Mendez had 22 kills and Amy Erben had 19 to lead SDSU over Nebraska. Mendez and setter Erin Tomblin were named to the all-tournament team.

Point Loma Nazarene College defeated Dominican (Calif.) College, 15-13, 15-10, and Southern Oregon, 15-3, 16-14, then lost to Oregon Tech, 15-9, 15-5, to finish third in the Oregon Tech Tournament. In seven matches (19 games) USIU went 4-3. Connie Navarro and Janelle Dutton had 46 and 43 kills. Tracy Daniels hit 64 of 65 serves, including 13 aces.

MEN’S SOCCER

Blake Okland had a goal an assist to lead Point Loma Nazarene College (2-0) over Pacific Christian, 4-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC San Diego, ranked seventh in NCAA Division III, shut out Pomona-Pitzer, 10-0, and Whitman College (Wash.), 2-0, to win the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. UCSD (4-0) outscored its three opponents, 15-0, in the tournament.

Erin Paterson scored the first two goals, and Laurie Christensen added two more and an assist to lead U.S. International University (1-1) past Claremont College, 7-1. Sally Weigand also scored a goal and had three assists.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego, ranked 13th in the nation, opened its season with a 9-5 loss to seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara at Santa Barbara.

UCSD trailed by a goal entering the fourth period but could not take advantage of its scoring opportunities.

The Tritons then rallied to defeat UC Riverside, 25-2, and Occidental, 15-0, also at UCSB.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

San Diego State won the Cal State Fullerton Invitational. Cal State Long Beach was second and Fullerton third.
