Hueneme 14, Hawthorne 13--Highly touted Hawthorne’s last-minute drive ended with a fumble and the Cougars lost their football opener, 14-13, Saturday night to Hueneme in Oxnard. The Cougars, rated seventh in The Times, moved the ball on their final possession, but a completed pass by quarterback Curtis Conway was fumbled and recovered by Hueneme with 54 seconds left. The home team ran out the clock for the victory.

For the evening, Conway completed 8 of 20 passes for 120 yards and ran for 69 yards on 9 carries.

Miraleste 16, Laverne Lutheran 0--The Marauders, who didn’t know if they would have a team two months ago, opened the season Saturday playing error-free ball and tough defense at Laverne, holding the host team to 50 yards in offense.

Tailback Bret Peabody led the Marauder attack with 120 yards rushing and an 8-yard touchdown. Quarterback Mike Booth added 65 yards rushing and a 15-yard scoring scramble. The final points came on a safety registered by linebacker Rick Galyaen.

Coast Christian 42, Victor Valley Christian 0--The Southern Section’s top-rated eight-man team had no trouble in its opener Saturday at Mira Costa.
