The Washington Redskins signed kick return specialist Billy (White Shoes) Johnson and tight end Ron Middleton after putting cornerback Barry Wilburn and special teams standout Reggie Branch on the injured-reserve list.
Johnson, 36, previously played with the Houston Oilers and the Atlanta Falcons during an NFL career that began in 1974. He had participant in an informal tryout with the Redskins last month but was not signed.
Johnson, who spent the 1981 season with Montreal of the Canadian Football League, holds the NFL record for most punt returns, 279, and punt return yardage, 3,291.
