College Soccer : Northridge Drops Third Soccer Match

Share

Cal State Northridge soccer Coach Marwan Ass’ad insisted that 1988 was not a rebuilding year for the Matadors.

As the season progresses, however, Ass’ad might have to question that analysis. Especially if the team continues to perform as it did in a 3-2 nonconference defeat at Claremont-Mudd on Wednesday.

The Matadors held a 2-1 lead after Steve Lazarus’ goal at the 63-minute mark, but Claremont (1-1-1) scored two goals in the last six minutes.

The loss was the third of the season for Northridge, last year’s NCAA Division II runner-up. The Matadors were 19-2-1 a year ago.

Mahntie Reeves scored the winning goal for Claremont-Mudd with 2:57 remaining.

Northridge (2-3) had a chance to send the match into overtime, but Scott Piri’s penalty kick was blocked by Claremont goalkeeper Martin Groff with no time remaining.

Scott Hunter scored Northridge’s first goal at the 48-minute mark.
