Krickstein Out; Lendl May Withdraw
First Pat Cash, now Aaron Krickstein. Who’s going to withdraw from the Volvo tennis tournament next, Ivan Lendl?
Krickstein, ranked No. 14 in the world, pulled out of the event Thursday because of a groin injury. An Achilles’ tendon problem had forced Cash to withdraw Wednesday. And the tournament, which starts Monday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA, may have to go on without Lendl.
Lendl, the world’s No. 2 player, has already decided to withdraw, according to a report in Newsday.
Bob Kramer of the Southern California Tennis Assn., which promotes the tournament, said he is unaware of Lendl’s intentions.
Newsday reported that Lendl’s shoulder is sore, and he is contemplating surgery but will rest the shoulder first. If Lendl withdraws because of injury, he must notify the Assn. of Tennis Professionals (ATP) by 10 a.m., PDT, today.
Lendl could not be reached for comment.
If Lendl withdraws, the highest-ranked players in the field will be No. 4 Andre Agassi, No. 22 Kevin Curren, No. 24 John McEnroe, No. 29 Mikael Pernfors, No. 31 David Pate, No. 36 Derrick Rostagno and No. 40 Michael Chang.
