‘Bama-Texas A&M; Game Postponed Due to Gilbert

Texas A&M; has agreed to postpone today’s game with No. 13-ranked Alabama after the Crimson Tide said it would not come to Texas because of travel problems caused by Hurricane Gilbert.

Texas A&M; Coach Jackie Sherrill tried to change Alabama officials’ minds Friday after Alabama Athletic Director Steve Sloan announced the postponement without A&M;’s knowledge.

“During my conversation with Coach Bill Curry and Steve Sloan, they said it was their decision not to bring their traveling party due to advice from experts and the advice of Delta Airlines,” Sherrill said in a prepared statement.

The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1. ESPN said it would televise the rescheduled game.

Sherrill would have preferred if Alabama had at least made the trip.

“Our experts and our meteorologists have different opinions than Alabama’s,” he said. “I’m sitting here looking at blue skies, and I tried to take steps to bring Alabama’s team here today, and then if the weather should take a turn for the worse--if the situation should become dangerous--we would cancel the game.”
