The New York Daily News reported that Dallas Green will replace Lou Piniella as manager of the New York Yankees as part of a major overhaul of the team.

Other possible moves to be made after the season ends, according to the newspaper, include trading Jack Clark, John Candelaria and Don Mattingly and releasing Ron Guidry.

Piniella, who signed a 3-year contract when Billy Martin was fired for the fifth time in June, said he had not heard from owner George Steinbrenner. “I really haven’t even thought about next year,” he said.

Green, who managed the Philadelphia Phillies to the World Series championship in 1980, has been out of baseball since he was fired as general manager of the Chicago Cubs after last season.

Said Mattingly, voted the American League’s most valuable player in 1986: “It’s not always a bad thing to make changes. It means you’re talking about winning.”
