Tom Hawkins ran for two touchdowns and threw for one to lead Foothill High School to a 28-10 nonleague victory over Marina Thursday night at Tustin High School.

Hawkins’ two rushing scores came in the first half as the Knights (2-1) built a 14-0 lead. He then threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Ward VanPelt early in the fourth quarter as the Knights held off a late Marina (0-3) scoring bid for the victory.

The loss was Marina’s eighth in a row since last season.

“We should have beaten them 35-0, but we had some breakdowns on our special teams,” Foothill Coach Jerry Howell said. “I was mad because our special teams didn’t take their responsibilities as seriously as they should have.”

Marina Coach Chris Ramsey said, “Our kids played hard, but we didn’t play well. I’m not making any excuses, but we’ve got to get better execution on offense if we are to win games.”

Hawkins scored the first of his touchdowns with five minutes gone in the first quarter when he broke three Marina tackles on an 8-yard scoring run. Hawkins’ touchdown culminated Foothill’s first offensive series, which traveled 58 yards in 7 plays.

Hawkins picked up 28 of those yards through the air with a 13-yard pass to Scott Barton and a 15-yard pass to Mike Wallace.

Hawkins’ second touchdown came with seven minutes left in the half on a 2-yard run on a fourth-down play. The score was made possible 11 plays earlier when Knight defensive back Todd Delnoce intercepted a David Schultz pass on the Viking 23.

Marina, which was shut out in its first two games, scored its first points with two minutes remaining in the half when Stacy Kagasoff returned a Knight punt 67 yards for a touchdown.

Marina’s Craig Irby recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Foothill 28, and five plays later, Mike Zenker narrowed the deficit to 14-10 on a 30-yard field goal with 37 seconds left in the half.

Barton finished the game with 96 yards on 10 carries to lead Foothill’s running backs.
