Rockies Roundup : Wyoming Wins on Last Play, 48-45

Freshman Sean Fleming kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1 second left to give Wyoming a 48-45 comeback victory over the Air Force Saturday in Western Athletic Conference game at Air Force Academy, Colo., Saturday.

Fleming’s field goal came 90 seconds after Wyoming’s Steve Bena ran for a 9-yard touchdown and Fleming kicked the extra point when Wyoming Coach Paul Roach elected to go for a 45-45 tie.

The winning field goal came after Wyoming’s Ron Dean recovered a fumble by Air Force quarterback Dee Dowis on the Falcons’ 42-yard line with 45 seconds left.

Wyoming quarterback Randy Welniak then completed a 14-yard pass to Freddy Dussett and gained 10 more yards on a quarterback keeper. Dabby Dawson then rushed for 8 yards, bringing the ball to the 10-yard line to set the stage for Fleming’s kick.

Dowis gave the Air Force a 45-38 lead with 2:42 left to go on a 69-yard sprint around right end.

Welniak, a fifth-year senior, threw 3 touchdown passes and ran for another.

But the Cowboys had to overcome a 4-touchdown explosion by Air Force in the third quarter that gave the Falcons a 38-17 lead going into the final quarter.

Wyoming, 4-0 overall, is 2-0 in the WAC. Air Force falls to 2-2 and 1-2.

Utah St. 32, New Mexico St. 20--Brent Snyder passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for a third as Utah State defeated New Mexico State in a Big West game at Logan, Utah.

Utah State relied largely on the pass, including a 78-yard touchdown bomb from Snyder to wide receiver Kendal Smith in the second quarter.

New Mexico State opened the scoring with a 32-yard field goal by Dat Ly, but Snyder threw a 29-yard pass to Pat Newman to set up Snyder’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

Synder also completed a 39-yard pass to wide receiver Tracy Jenkins that set up a 22-yard field goal by Russ Moody, making it 17-3 at the half.

The victory boosts Utah State to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. New Mexico State is 0-4 and 0-3.

Hawaii 48, Utah 20--Warren Jones threw for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for a fourth to lead the Rainbow Warriors to a WAC victory at Salt Lake City.

After the Utes got within 20-14 early in the third quarter, Jones killed Utah’s comeback hopes with a 76-yard touchdown bomb to Larry Khan-Smith.

Jones’ 9-yard touchdown run then made it 33-14.

Hawaii, 4-0 overall, is now 2-0 in the WAC. Utah is 1-2 and 0-1.

Akron 30, New Mexico 28--Tom Dombroski kicked a 22-yard field goal in the final minute to give Akron a victory at Albuquerque, N.M.

The Zips entered the final quarter leading 24-14, but New Mexico (1-3) scored on a 62-yard pass play from Jeremy Leach to John Duff and a 24-yard pass from Leach to Al Owens to take a 28-27 lead.

But the Zips (1-3) passed their way down to the Lobos’ 15, and after three running plays took the ball to the 7, Dombroski split the uprights for the winning field goal.

Dombroski also hit a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The game featured two safeties, both on fumbles.

New Mexico took a 2-0 lead when on Akron’s first play from scrimmage, running back John Mooten fumbled a bad pitch out of the end zone.
