Fall Notebook / Sean Waters : Quarterbacks Trendy at Buena

Buena quarterback Jason Isaacs threw for a school-record 319 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 28-17 win over Newbury Park last week. But if he had his druthers, Isaacs would have begun the season as a defensive back.

That would have pleased last year’s quarterback, Dan White, who wanted his old job back.

“It’s been a crazy situation here,” Buena Coach Rick Scott said. “Quarterback hasn’t been an enviable postion at Buena because they get blamed the most for losing. White wanted to be the quarterback, but he has the body and size of linebacker and he’s the key to our defense.”

White remains Buena’s backup quarterback, but he would have to change to smaller shoulder pads should he be called upon.

Meanwhile, Isaacs is shouldering the offensive load quite well. And playing quarterback has become awfully hip at Buena.

Command performance: Santa Clara’s offensive line gave quarterback Tim Gutierrez enough time to post some impressive statistics in the Saints’ 31-21 win over Rio Mesa last week.

Gutierrez completed 24 of 31 passes--including 12 in a row--for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.

“Rio Mesa put on a heck of a rush, but they couldn’t get to Timmy,” Coach Steve Dann said. “He has a quick release, but he never had to hurry.”

The Santa Clara line of guards Jim Caballero and J.R. Perez, center Ted Lawrence and tackles Jason Castro and Leo Berry allowed only one sack in the game.

Add Santa Clara: Tight end Fred Rodriguez, a senior, didn’t need an introduction when he ran his routes through Rio Mesa’s secondary.

Rodriquez, who caught 3 passes for 62 yards and 1 touchdown, attended Rio Mesa his junior year after transferring from Santa Clara.

“Fred is basically a Santa Clara kid and most of his friends are at the school,” Santa Clara Coach Steve Dann said. “He went to Santa Clara during his sophomore year, but left for personal reasons.”

In addition to his 22-yard touchdown reception, Rodriguez made a key catch during the Saints’ 80-yard drive with 1:14 left. On third and 8, Rodriguez caught the ball for a first down, ran 3 yards backwards, picked up a block and gained an additional 15 yards.

“I almost died when he ran backwards,” Dann said. “He was really the hero in the game.”

Kicking themselves: If it had been a Channel League game, Oxnard Coach Jack Davis said he would have kicked the extra point and settled for a tie in last week’s 26-25 loss to Channel Islands.

But since it was a nonleague game, Davis took his chances and had quarterback Johnel Turner try for a 2-point conversion pass.

That was a surprising call because Oxnard has had so much success with its new wishbone offense and the Yellowjackets were dominating the line of scrimmage late in the game.

“We’re still wondering ourselves why we decided to pass,” Davis said. “My son called the play and he makes the right decision more often than not. It was not a smart play for 3 yards. The smarter thing to do was to give the ball to our fullback, Bryant Taylor.”

Turner had to outrun the Channel Islands’ rush and his throw was intercepted in the end zone by Renard Cain.

Football miscellany: Oxnard and Channel Islands combined to miss five extra-point kick attempts in their game last week. . . . Santa Paula might have its third consecutive all-conference quarterback. Rick Carpenter completed 20 of 51 passes for 231 yards in last week’s 42-19 loss to Carpinteria. Carpenter needs 213 yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau in four games. . . . The Bulldogs have also stopped five scoring drives within the 15-yard line and three within the 2-yard line. . . . Nordhoff quarterback Jeremy Anthony completed 5 of 12 passes for zero yards as Nordhoff lost to St. Bonaventure, 17-8. Rob Fournier replaced Anthony in the second half and completed 6 of 13 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. . . . Oak Park has not allowed a point in 12 quarters and the Eagles have outscored their opponents, 96-0.

The Bradley method: Hueneme running back Freddie Bradley continues to be hampered by a sore right ankle, but you couldn’t tell by looking at his statistics.

Bradley rushed 25 times for 172 yards and scored a touchdown in a 14-7 win over Camarillo last week.

“He’s still dragging that leg around in practice,” Coach George Machado said.

JC update: Moorpark College’s 28-6 nonconference victory over Santa Monica City was costly for Moorpark, which lost center Matt Dalsing for the season.

Moorpark (2-0) plays at Compton in a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday.
