HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : City Section Roundup : Kyman Fuels Reseda’s 35-0 Rout of Poly

Reseda quarterback Coley Kyman was nearly unstoppable Friday night, completing all 5 of his passes for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns and running for 2 more scores to lead the Regents to a 35-0 win at Poly in the Valley Pac 8 Conference opener for both teams.

Kyman hit Fred Feyrer with a 45-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to start the scoring. On the Regents’ next possession, Kyman connected with Donald Johnson on a 52-yard touchdown pass. Kyman’s 2-yard touchdown run closed the first-half scoring.

Poly took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched to the Reseda 5-yard line, where cornerback John Marks recovered running back Jonathan Campbell’s fumble.

The Regents responded with a 95-yard drive. William Gaines (156 yards in 14 carries) ran 59 yards to the Poly 4-yard line. He scored two plays later from 4 yards. Kyman’s 35-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run capped the rout. Kyman rushed for 50 yards in 6 carries.

Quarterback Jason Kemp accounted for most of Poly’s 146 yards, completing 12 of 23 passes for 125 yards. Wide receiver Eddie Guerrero caught a game-high 5 passes for 72 yards.

Sylmar 17, Van Nuys 15--Running back Jerome Casey’s 23-yard touchdown run with 7:02 left gave the Spartans a come-from-behind win in a seesaw battle at Van Nuys.

Casey’s winning run came 3 1/2 minutes after Bill Grandi gave Van Nuys a 15-11 lead with a 90-yard kickoff return. Sylmar had taken an 11-8 lead one play earlier on Oscar Romo’s 36-yard field goal.

Van Nuys jumped on top, 8-0, on a 4-yard pass from Keith Quigley to Roy Vasich and a conversion run by Melvin Batrez in the second quarter. But Sylmar got even in the third quarter when Casey, who finished with 158 yards in 26 carries, ran five yards for the first of two touchdowns. Robert Augustus added the conversion run. Quigley completed 18 of 44 passes for 186 yards but had 5 passes intercepted.
