UCSD Wins Titles in Cross-Country

UC San Diego’s men and women won the Division II team titles Saturday at the Biola Invitational cross-country meet at Biola University in La Mirada.

Point Loma Nazarene College’s Ronny Andersson and Denise McFayden of UCSD won the individual titles.

Andersson, a freshman from Sweden, covered the men’s course in 25:58. UCSD finished with 31 points in Division II to defeat PLNC (73). UCSD’s top finisher was Merrell Hora, fourth in 26:21

UCSD won the women’s Division II team competition with 25 points. Point Loma finished second (72), and the University of San Diego was fourth (98).

McFayden ran the women’s course in 18:44, 3 seconds ahead of teammate Jessie Hartman.

MEN’S SOCCER

Host U.S. International University defeated New Mexico, 5-1, in a nonleague game. Damian Glancy scored two goals and had two assists in USIU’s third consecutive victory. The Gulls are 4-5, New Mexico 4-9.

Cal Lutheran defeated Point Loma Nazarene College, 3-1, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in Thousand Oaks. Crusader Mike Friesen tied the game at 1 20 minutes into the first half. Goalie Joel Entreken saved a penalty shot for Point Loma (0-2, 6-4-1).

RUNNING

Matt Clayton won the men’s title in the San Diego Track Club’s Moving Comfort 8K race, covering the distance in 24:15 and missing Steve McCormack’s 1987 course record by 4 seconds at Fiesta Island.

Jeanne Lassee-Johnson won the women’s title in 27:13, 7 seconds off Laurie Crisp’s 1987 time.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College (10-13) defeated visiting Master’s College, 15-4, 16-14, 15-8, in a nonleague match. Connie Navarro led the Crusaders with 13 kills.

UCSD’s Rachel Vetter, with 10 kills, led the Tritons (23-5) past visiting Pomona-Pitzer, 15-9, 16-14, 15-12 in a nonleague match. Katrina Rojas had 18 kills for Pomona-Pitzer (13-7).
