Tom Ramsey, the former UCLA player who started at quarterback for New England earlier this month, was released by the Patriots.

The elevation of Doug Flutie to starting quarterback and the presence of veterans Steve Grogan and Tony Eason apparently made Ramsey expendable.

Ramsey, 27, started one game this season, Oct. 2 against Indianapolis. He completed 8 of 19 passes for 77 yards before Flutie replaced him to start the 4th quarter and won the game with a last-minute touchdown.

Ramsey, disgruntled at the switch, reportedly asked to be released after the game.

Flutie struggled in New England’s next game, a 45-3 loss to Green Bay, but rebounded to lead the Patriots to a 27-21 upset Sunday over the previously unbeaten Cincinnati Bengals.
