Greg Hansell scored on a 70-yard punt return in the third quarter to break open a close game and spark Kennedy High School to a 28-6 victory over Los Amigos Friday night in a Garden Grove League football game in front of about 1,700 at Western High School.

After both teams struggled to move the ball in the first half, Hansell scored on the first of 2 big plays in the third quarter to give Kennedy (6-1-1 overall and 4-0 in league play) a 14-0 lead. Hansell took the punt and ran right up the middle, breaking 3 tackles on his way to the end zone.

Two plays after the kickoff, Kennedy’s Rick Woodward returned a fumble 46 yards for a touchdown. After Larry Jensen made his third of 4 extra points, Kennedy led, 21-0.

“The big plays made the difference,” Kennedy Coach Mitch Olsen said. “Their defense really took it to us, and we were not expecting that.”

Kennedy took a 7-0 lead on its first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Pete Monter completed a 31-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Tom Deep.

Los Amigos (2-5-1, 2-2) scored late in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard run by Roy Togo.

Kennedy scored its final touchdown on a 7-yard run by Kurtis Lindquist that capped a 9-play, 62-yard drive. It was the only sustained drive of the game for Kennedy.

Hansell, also a punter and defensive back, had punts of 61 and 58 yards on his only 2 attempts and had an interception.
