San Diego State Notebook : Barrick to Start at Quarterback

Share

Scott Barrick’s relief work has earned him the starting quarterback role for San Diego State Saturday when the Aztecs travel to Utah.

“I think he deserves a chance,” San Diego State Coach Denny Stolz said. “He played well in the second half (against Colorado State). We’ll start him and see what happens.”

The Aztecs, 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, have 5 consecutive losses. Senior Brad Platt, who outplayed Barrick during practice last spring to earn the starting quarterback position, has started all 7 games.

But Barrick, a Fallbrook High School graduate, started the second half Saturday during SDSU’s 13-7 loss to Colorado State and directed the Aztecs to their only touchdown. Barrick, a redshirt freshman, completed 12 of 19 passes for 152 yards and an interception. He completed his first 6 passes and directed SDSU to an 86-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown drive.

Stolz said he has been thinking about the move for a couple of weeks.

Platt has completed 130 of 226 passes (58%) for 3 touchdowns this season. He has also thrown 10 interceptions. Barrick is 14 of 29 (48%) with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Aztec Notes

Injured wide receiver Alfred Jackson (dislocated fingers) has been practicing at cornerback and may see action against Utah. Cornerback Randy Peterson has been practicing at wide receiver to replace Jackson.
