PREP FOOTBALL : Garden Grove League Roundup : La Quinta Falls to Los Amigos

Los Amigos High School, which had not defeated La Quinta in 6 years, scored 13 points in the first quarter and shut down the Aztecs in the second half for a 13-10 Garden Grove League victory Friday in front of 750 at Garden Grove.

Jeff Rojek opened the scoring for the Lobos (3-5 overall, 3-2 in league play) on a 2-yard run to cap a 4-play, 76-yard drive. The extra point failed.

On Los Amigos’ next series after a blocked punt by Tony Hertica, quarterback Shane Rumney found Matt McCreary for a 17-yard touchdown and Terry King kicked the extra point to increase the lead to 13-0.

La Quinta (5-3, 3-2) responded with a 4-play, 47-yard drive that culminated on a 21-yard run by Tom Cherms to close the lead to 13-7. The Aztecs had two scores nullified by penalties.

La Quinta kicker Matt Logan made the score, 13-10, with no time left in the first half with a 37-yard field goal. Los Amigos roughed quarterback Trent Julian on the last play of the half and the 15-yard penalty gave Logan an opportunity to try the field goal.

Neither team got closer than the other’s 20-yard line in the second half.

Rojek carried the ball 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown for the Lobos. La Quinta was led by Cherms with 13 carries for 71 yards. He also caught 4 passes for 67 yards.

In another Garden Grove League game:

Pacifica 39, Rancho Alamitos 0--Chris Shockley scored the first 18 points of the game and the Mariners remained unbeaten in league play at Bolsa Grande High School. Shockley scored on runs of 26 and 28 yards in the first quarter and on a 75-yard run in the second quarter. Pacifica (6-1-1, 5-0) remained tied for first place with Kennedy. The Mariners and Fighting Irish play Thursday night. Rancho Alamitos fell to 2-6 and 1-4 in league.
