Los Amigos High School, which had not defeated La Quinta in 6 years, scored 13 points in the first quarter and shut down the Aztecs in the second half for a 13-10 Garden Grove League victory Friday in front of 750 at Garden Grove.
Jeff Rojek opened the scoring for the Lobos (3-5 overall, 3-2 in league play) on a 2-yard run to cap a 4-play, 76-yard drive. The extra point failed.
On Los Amigos’ next series after a blocked punt by Tony Hertica, quarterback Shane Rumney found Matt McCreary for a 17-yard touchdown and Terry King kicked the extra point to increase the lead to 13-0.
La Quinta (5-3, 3-2) responded with a 4-play, 47-yard drive that culminated on a 21-yard run by Tom Cherms to close the lead to 13-7. The Aztecs had two scores nullified by penalties.
La Quinta kicker Matt Logan made the score, 13-10, with no time left in the first half with a 37-yard field goal. Los Amigos roughed quarterback Trent Julian on the last play of the half and the 15-yard penalty gave Logan an opportunity to try the field goal.
Neither team got closer than the other’s 20-yard line in the second half.
Rojek carried the ball 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown for the Lobos. La Quinta was led by Cherms with 13 carries for 71 yards. He also caught 4 passes for 67 yards.
