Championship Drive Begins for Chatsworth

Share

The Chatsworth High girls’ volleyball team has always played in the shadow of the school’s more successful boys’ team, a six-time City Section 4-A Division finalist. But the girls have a chance to do something the boys have not done since 1984--win a City championship.

Chatsworth, along with West Valley League opponents Cleveland and El Camino Real, will launch its drive for the championship today in a round-robin playoff tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills that begins at 8:30 a.m.

Chatsworth, which swept through league play with a 10-0 record, is the third-seeded team in the 12-team tournament. The teams are divided into 3, 4-team pools and each team plays 2 games against its pool opponents.

The top 2 teams from each pool and 2 of the 3 third-place teams advance to Tuesday’s single-elimination quarterfinals.

Chatsworth plays Roosevelt, Venice and San Pedro in pool play.

El Camino Real is in the same pool with University--the top-seeded team in the 4-A Division--Huntington Park and Banning.

Cleveland plays Carson--the 4-A’s second-seeded team--Palisades and Bell.
