THE PREPS : South Coast League Football : Cougars Capitalize, Win Big

Capistrano Valley High School finished its regular season with a 45-0 victory over visiting San Clemente Thursday night.

Capistrano Valley (6-4, 3-2) clinched at least a second-place tie with the victory, pending tonight’s South Coast League action. San Clemente finished the year at 1-9, 0-5.

Turnovers by San Clemente repeatedly set up Capistrano Valley for short scoring drives. San Clemente’s problems began on the first play of the game, when the Tritons fumbled the ball away at the San Clemente 20-yard line.

A 5-yard penalty moved Capistrano Valley back, but 3 plays later, quarterback Tony Solliday connected with running back Chris Adams on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Adams led the Cougars with 3 touchdowns, 1 on an 82-yard run in the fourth quarter. Adams, a sophomore, was the leading rusher in the game with 129 yards in 12 attempts.

Solliday, also a sophomore, completed 10 of 15 passes for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Capistrano Valley scored 2 touchdowns in the second quarter, the first on a 3-yard run by Adams. Solliday hit wide receiver Toney Jenkins with a 17-yard scoring pass with 2:13 remaining in the half.

Scott Hannah added a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Adams broke loose on his 82-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter after a San Clemente fumble.

An interception by linebacker Scott Carpenter set up Capistrano Valley’s next score. Running back Chi Chi Biehn scored on a 24-yard run. Jenkins had Capistrano Valley’s final score with a 28-yard interception return.
