Pacifica High School’s Bobby Anderson kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4 minutes 26 seconds to play as the Mariners captured the Garden Grove League title with a 15-14 victory over La Quinta Friday at Garden Grove High School.
Pacifica (8-1-1 overall, 7-0 in league play) came from behind to win for the second week in a row. After trailing, 14-10, at the half, the Mariners got 2 points on a safety with 8:20 to play by forcing quarterback Trent Julian to step out of the end zone. The Mariners then took the ensuing free kick and drove 48 yards for the winning field goal.
La Quinta (6-4, 4-3) was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.
The Aztecs took a 14-0 first-half lead on touchdown runs of 20 and 53 yards by Tom Cherms. However, the Aztecs could not generate any offense in the second half.
Anderson made the score, 14-7, with a 59-yard scoring pass to Kevin Ashworth with 5:25 to play in the half and made a 24-yard field goal with 37 seconds left to make it 14-10 at halftime.
“It hasn’t been our nature to have to come from behind this season. I’m pleased with the results,” Pacifica Coach Bill Craven said.
Anderson completed 9 of 21 passes for 166 yards and 1 touchdown, and running back Chris Schockley paced the Mariner ground attack with 94 yards in 29 carries.
Cherms carried the ball 16 times for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns to pace the Aztecs.
