Poway Reaches Volleyball Semifinal : Amy Boyer, Heather Collins Lead the Way Past Mar Vista

Setter Amy Boyer had 5 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks as host Poway defeated Mar Vista, 15-6, 15-12, 15-10, in the San Diego Section Division I volleyball quarterfinals Saturday.

Poway took a 13-0 lead in the first game before Mar Vista closed the gap.

“The team played very well,” Eric Reis, Poway assistant coach, said. “Mar Vista plays real good defense, and just about everything came back. But our girls picked it up, set and passed well, and played well all around. We played real well in the third game.”

Poway is 23-0 this season.

Heather Collins had 9 kills and 3 aces for Poway, Paige Smith added 6 kills, and Shannan Griffin had 6 kills, 4 service aces and 3 stuff blocks.

In other Division I quarterfinal volleyball matches:

Serra def. Point Loma 13-15, 15-11, 12-15, 15-3, 15-3--Lynn Patrick had 28 kills to lead host Serra from behind. Patrick was 9 for 13 spiking in the final game. Jenny Codling added 9 kills for Serra.

Torrey Pines def. Vista, 15-12, 17-15, 15-7--Torrey Pines, the No. 2-seeded team, defeated unseeded Vista in straight games to advance to the semifinals Wednesday where it will face Serra. Vista setter Gina Teixiera jammed her ring finger on her left hand in warmups but played in pain until the third game. Chris Enger of Vista (11-13) had 13 kills.

Granite Hills def. San Pasqual, 6-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-11--Granite Hills’ Shelly Sampson had 14 kills and Laura Becker added 11 as the No. 4 seed Granite Hills defeated No. 5 seed San Pasqual. Granite Hills advances to the semifinals where it will play top-seeded Poway.

Division III Volleyball:

Calvin Christian def. Holtville 15-13, 15-5, 15-4--Betsy Wilgenburg led Calvin Christian to the semifinals of the San Diego Section Division III section playoffs with 11 kills. Annetta DeJong had 7 kills and 4 service aces. Calvin Christian meets top-seed Francis Parker Wednesday.

Water Polo Quarterfinals:

Monte Vista 12, Mt. Miguel 10--Mike Poulson scored 6 goals and Eric Valderhaug added 4 as Monte Vista upset fourth-seeded Mt. Miguel. John Hundley and Todd Smith each scored a goal to round out the scoring for Monte Vista, which scored 5 fourth-quarter goals in the come-from-behind win. Goalie John Farinsky had 13 saves for Monte Vista.

Coronado 18, Mt. Carmel 10--In a quarterfinal match at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, Rob Williams led Coronado with 6 goals and Mt. Carmel’s Jason Beedle had 5.

Poway 18, Fallbrook 8--Junior driver Chuck Snay led Poway with 11 goals, and goalkeeper Steffan Pyle had 13 saves. In the semifinals, Poway meets USDHS, 15-11 winners over Valhalla, at 8:30 on Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.
