Southland Roundup : Occidental Claims SCIAC Title

Senior Mike Sandlin rushed for 228 yards in 26 carries and scored on runs of 59, 29 and 31 yards to lead Occidental to a 27-10 victory over Whittier College Saturday night at Whittier.

The victory gave Oxy, 8-1 overall, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 5-0 mark. Whittier falls to 4-5 and 2-2-1.

Redlands 18, La Verne 13--Robert Lough rushed for 29 yards and 1 touchdown and passed for another to lead Redlands in an SCIAC game at La Verne. Redlands (6-3, 4-1) finished the season in second place.

Claremont-Mudd 42, Pomona-Pitzer 12--Reed Pangborn ran for 186 yards and scored 4 touchdowns and Mike Pembroke rushed for 134 yards to lead Claremont to an SCIAC victory at Claremont-Mudd. Claremont-Mudd (3-6, 2-4) scored on its first 6 possessions. Pomona-Pitzer finished the season winless (0-8, 0-6).

Azusa Pacific 14, U. San Diego 13--Azusa Pacific withstood a fourth-quarter threat and ran out the clock to beat the San Diego at Azusa Pacific. With 2:20 remaining, Azusa Pacific stopped San Diego at fourth and 2 at the Cougars’ 29-yard line to give Azusa its eighth straight victory over San Diego. The Cougars finish 7-1, San Diego 5-4.

CS Northridge 35, Southern Utah St. 33--Albert Fann ran for 3 touchdowns and caught a pass for another and Rob Huffman completed 17 of 30 passes for 227 yards to lead the Matadors (6-5, 2-4) to a Western Football Conference win over Southern Utah (4-7, 2-4) at Cedar City, Utah.

UC Santa Barbara 22, Western New Mexico 21--Fred Freking and Mike Leonard combined to stop Steve Mitchell’s attempted two-point conversion run with 11 seconds left to lead UC Santa Barbara (6-4) over Western New Mexico (4-4-1), at Santa Barbara.
